Revista Mexicana de Medicina Familiar www.revmexmedicinafamiliar.org RESUMEN: La imagen corporal se centra en una representación mental que implica lo que se piensa, se siente, cómo se percibe y actúa en relación con el propio cuerpo. Objetivo: Estimar la asociación del índice de masa corporal (IMC) con la imagen corporal y autoestima en adultos jóvenes, en una unidad de medicina familiar. Material y métodos: Estudio observacional, analítico, prolectivo, transversal, con una muestra de 411 pacientes, con los siguientes criterios de inclusión: edades entre 18 y 35 años, sin comorbilidades, mujeres no embarazadas y firma de carta consentimiento informado. Se utilizaron dos instrumentos: Pictograma de Stunkard (alfa de Cronbach 0.94) y Escala de Rosenberg (alfa de Cronbach 0.73). Se realizó análisis inferencial de variables IMC e imagen corporal e IMC y autoestima por medio de la prueba de Kruskal-Wallis (p < 0.05). Resultados: Existe relación entre IMC con percepción de la imagen corporal en el 25.1%; no se encontró relación entre IMC con autoestima, en el 22.8%. Conclusiones: El IMC y la imagen corporal son factores que pueden influir en el estado emocional del individuo y es necesario llevar a cabo programas que mejoren el aspecto físico y fortalezcan la autoestima.Palabras clave: Obesidad. Índice de masa corporal.ABSTRACT: Background: Body image focuses on a mental representation that involves what one thinks, and feels, how one perceives and acts in relation to one's own body. Objective: Estimate the association of body mass index with body image and self-esteem in young adults, in a family medicine unit. Material and methods: Observational, analytical, prolective, cross-sectional study, with a sample of 411 patients, with the following inclusion criteria: age between 18 and 35 years, without comorbidities, non-pregnant women and signature of informed consent letter. Two instruments were used: Stunkard Pictogram (Cronbach's alpha 0.94), and Rosenberg Scale (Cronbach's alpha 0.73). Inferential analysis of variables body mass index and body image and body mass index and self-esteem was performed by means of the Kruskal-Wallis test (p < 0.05). Results: There is a relationship between body mass index with body image perception in 25.1%; no relationship was found between body mass index with self-esteem, in 22.8%. Conclusions: Body mass index and body image are factors that can influence the emotional state of the individual and it is necessary to carry out programs that improve physical appearance and strengthen self-esteem.
