INQ‐15 cut‐off scores for suicidal ideation screening of women with chronic, invisible illnesses

Abstract: In the interpersonal theory of suicide, perceived burdensomeness (PB) and thwarted belongingness (TB) are proximal triggers of suicidal ideation. Using the 15‐item version of the Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire (INQ‐15), suicidal ideation in psychiatric inpatients was predicted by the PB and TB scales, and cut‐off scores were recommended. In this study, women (N = 942) who reported one or more chronic, invisible illnesses completed an online survey including the INQ‐15 and the Suicide Behaviours Questionnair… Show more

“…Some scholars suggest that there may be some cultural and linguistic differences in INQ#9 (Hallensleben et al, 2016; Iliceto et al, 2020). Nonetheless, consistent with other studies (Brookings & Pederson, 2019; Mitchell et al, 2017), TB‐8, excluding INQ#9, showed sound internal consistency as well.…”

“…Furthermore, although some recent studies utilized SBQ‐R to assess suicide risk in terms of INQ‐15 (Brookings & Pederson, 2019) and IPTS (Schönfelder et al, 2019), the current results were conditioned by the limitations of SBQ‐R. Importantly, its lack of ability to address suicide attempts impeded the study to address people with lumping ideations, chronic ideations, and (multiple) attempts.…”

“…ROC analyses revealed good performance of the INQ-8 Spanish version subscales of perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness. These results are in agreement with previous publications which reported that INQ-15 may be useful in the detection of SI [73]. In fact, our results are in line with those presented by Mitchell et al [74] who reported that perceived burdensomeness had larger effects on SI than thwarted belongingness.…”

“…Moreover, it has been found that cut-off scores of the INQ-15 of 17 for PB and 37 for TB correctly classificated high-risk and low-risk women with chronic illnesses, thus supporting the clinical relevance of the instrument (23). Mitchell et al (24) also found INQ-15 as a useful instrument to predict suicide ideation-related outcomes in psychiatric inpatients.…”
