“…Bay concluded that the basin is subjected already to moderate/high level of organic pollution (Tolosa et al, 2009). Previous studies about the spatial and temporal distribution of meiofaunal nematodes (Armenteros et al, 2009) and macrofauna (in preparation) suggest that the muddy bottoms in Cienfuegos Bay may suffer seasonal hypoxia with almost defaunation of macrofauna.…”

“…Cienfuegos Bay is a semi-enclosed shallow bay in the Caribbean Sea, dominated by organically enriched, muddy bottoms, although mangroves, seagrass meadows and beaches also occur within the bay. Additionally, heavy metal and hydrocarbon pollution is widespread in the sediments of the bay from industrial activities and human settlements in the basin (Tolosa et al, 2009). Increasingly development of the petroleum-related industrial activities have been occurring in Cienfuegos Bay, including refinement of crude petroleum, storage and transport of gasoline and diesel fuel, and processing of derivates like plastics.…”

“…Our values are comparable or higher than those previously reported for highly polluted coastal areas worldwide (e.g., Guanabara bay, Brazil, up to 9,700 ng g -1 dw; Cienfuegos bay, Cuba, up to 10,500 ng g -1 dw; Patos Lagoon, Brazil, up to 11,779 ng g -1 dw; Narragansett Bay, USA, up to 216,000 ng g -1 dw .). 3,31,60,61 PAH distribution was dominated by alkylated compounds, notably alkyl-naphthalenes. The Santo Antônio Lagoon and Channel samples exhibited the highest PAH concentrations, whereas the lowest concentrations were found in the Santa Marta and Mirim Lagoons with the exception of sample SM1 (organic carbon normalization revealed a 22-fold increase, which is much higher than the average (3-fold) for the samples from that location).…”

“…Organic material diagenesis from the diatom and plant material are source of perylene in anoxic sediment of the sea (Venkatesan, 1998;Boehm, 2006). Tolosa et al (2009) reported that in the Cienfuegos Bay, Cuba, perylene (PAHs natural) was found over in the estuarine areas of Damuji and Salado rivers. PAHs produced in the early diagenesis with a simple biology precursor only include some of PAHs, so that, it differentiated between multispecies complex of PAHs petrogenic and pyrogenic (Boehm, 2006).…”
