Inositols administration: further insights on their biological role

Abstract: In the last decades, inositols attracted a growing interest since the acknowledgement of their role in insulin-activated signalling pathways. Myo-inositol (MI) and D-Chiro Inositol (DCI) are the most important isoforms and their use as insulin-sensitizer in treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome is well known. New discoveries have paved the way for a wide range of new applications. For this reason, we collected the most interesting ideas and updates regarding inositols therapy to reason on innovative uses, w… Show more

“…Nutraceutical supplementation with inositols, alpha-lipoic acid, vitamin D, and metformin may hold promise in reducing the risk of GD in PCOS patients, although further research is needed to confirm their efficacy. We can benefit from the growing literature addressing clinical improvement of patient care [ 35 ].…”

“…It is worth mentioning that chronic anovulation is one of the most important causes of female infertility. The possible treatment of this condition was reported by some natraceutical supplementations such as D-chiro-inositol and Myo-inositol [ 27 , 28 ]. It is also crucial to analyze neonatal outcomes and long-term follow-up of children born from assisted reproductive technologies (ART).…”

“…MI can be also endogenously produced in the human kidney and liver from glucose-6-phosphate in just two reactions. The first one is catalyzed by MI-1-phosphate synthase (MIPS) and the second one by inositol monophosphatase-1 (IMPase) (Figure 1) [19][20][21]. To date, no dietary requirements regarding the amount of inositol daily intake have been established for humans.…”
