Southern Spain is the largest olive oil producer region in the world. In recent years organic agriculture systems have grown exponentially so that new alternative systems to produce organic olive cuttings are needed. Several bacterial isolates, namely Pantoea sp. AG9, Chryseobacterium sp. AG13, Chryseobacterium sp. CT348, Pseudomonas sp. CT364 and Azospirillum brasilense Cd (ATCC 29729), have been used to induce rooting in olive semi-hardwood cuttings of Arbequina, Hojiblanca and Picual cultivars of olive (Olea europea L). The first four strains were previously selected as auxin-producing bacteria and by their ability to promote rooting in model plants. They have been classified on the basis of their 16S rDNA gene sequence. The known auxin producer A. brasilense Cd strain has been used as a reference. The inoculation of olive cuttings was performed in two different ways: (i) by dipping cuttings in a liquid bacterial culture or (ii) by immersing them in a paste made of solid bacterial inoculant and sterile water. Under nursery conditions all of the tested bacterial strains were able to induce the rooting of olive cuttings to a similar or greater extent than the control cuttings treated with indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). The olive cultivars responded differently depending on the bacterial strain and the inoculation method. The strain that consistently gave the best results was Pantoea sp. AG9, the only one of the tested bacterial strains to express the enzyme 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase. The results are also discussed in terms of potential commercial interest and nursery feasibility performance of these strains.

-Our work concerned the optimization of inoculation of two agroforestry species of woody leguminous plants: Leucaena leucocephala and Acacia mangium with various strains of rhizobium. First, we showed that the physiological stage of the bacterial culture had no effect on nodulation and growth of the seedlings of Acacia mangium inoculated and cultivated in vitro for four months. For Leucaena leucocephala, the number of nodules was significantly higher when the seedlings were inoculated with a bacterial culture in stationary phase. On the other hand, whatever the species, no significant difference was noted with regards to the dry weight of the shoots. The effect of the size of inoculum on the nodulation and growth of the seedlings was studied in L. leucocephala after five months in a greenhouse. Our result show that an inoculation with bacterial cultures containing 10 9 to 10 10 bacteria per milliliter are the optimal conditions to have a maximum nodulation and growth of the seedlings. The two legume plant species showed significant differences with regard to the effect of the method of inoculation on nodulation and growth of the seedlings. For Acacia mangium, inoculation with a liquid culture one week after sowing was more favourable for the growth of the seedlings. On the other hand, for Leucaena leucocephala, this method of inoculation and the coating of seeds with a bacterial culture mixed with arabic gum improved significantly the growth of the seedlings. Results obtained in our study can be useful for the partners from developing countries involved in the large scale production of tree seedlings.Acacia mangium / Leucaena leucocephala / rhizobium / size of inoculum / symbiosis Résumé -Optimisation de l'inoculation de Leucaena leucocephala et de Acacia mangium avec rhizobium en conditions de serre. Nos travaux ont porté sur l'optimisation de l'inoculation de 2 espèces agroforestières de légumineuses ligneuses : Leucaena leucocephala et Acacia mangium avec différentes souches de rhizobium. Tout d'abord, nous avons montré que le stade physiologique de la culture bactérienne n'a aucune influence sur la nodulation et la croissance des plants d'Acacia mangium inoculés et cultivés in vitro pendant 4 mois. Pour Leucaena leucocephala, le nombre de nodules est significativement supérieur pour les plants inoculés avec une culture bactérienne en phase plateau. En revanche, quelle que soit l'espèce, aucune différence significative n'est notée en ce qui concerne le poids sec des parties aériennes. L'effet de la taille de l'inoculum sur la nodulation et la croissance des plants de L. leucocephala a été étudié après 5 mois de culture en serre. RESUMOObjetivou-se avaliar o efeito de doses e formas de aplicação de nitrogênio sobre o desempenho e produção de duas cultivares de trigo. O experimento, conduzido em Viçosa-MG, de maio a setembro de 2005, foi instalado segundo um esquema fatorial 2x2x5 no delineamento de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos avaliados consistiram da combinação das cultivares de trigo, BRS 210 e Pioneiro, duas formas de aplicação de adubo nitrogenado (dose total aplicada por ocasião da semeadura ou 20 kg ha -1 na semeadura e o restante em cobertura no início da fase de perfilhamento) e cinco doses de nitrogênio (40, 60, 80, 100 e 120 kg ha -1 ) tendo como fonte o sulfato de amônio. A cultivar Pioneiro apresentou maior potencial produtivo que a cultivar BRS 210, mas foi menos resistente ao acamamento. O parcelamento da adubação nitrogenada proporcionou maior acamamento e não trouxe benefícios à produtividade dos grãos. As doses de N promoveram resposta quadrática da produtividade dos grãos, com ponto de máxima estimado na dose de 96,8 kg ha -1 e, aumento linear do acamamento de plantas da cultivar Pioneiro. The treatments consisted of the combination of the two wheat cultivars, BRS 210 and Pioneiro, two nitrogen application methods (total dose applied at seed sowing or 20 kg ha -1 at sowing and the remaining as topdressing in the beginning of tillage) and five N doses (40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 kg ha -1 ) with ammonium sulfate as N source. Cultivar Pioneiro showed higher yield potential than cultivar BRS 210, but it was less resistance to lodging. Splitting nitrogen fertilization increased lodging and brought no benefit to grain yield. Grain yield response to N doses was quadratic, reaching maximum at 96.8 kg ha -1 , and linear increase in lodging of cultivar Pioneiro plants.
