The impact of having a child with special needs: Labour market adaptations of immigrant and majority mothers

“…Limited knowledge about welfare services, language barriers and limited social networks represent additional challenges for immigrant families that can make everyday life even more challenging than for majority families (Berg, 2015). In a qualitative study of immigrant parents caring for a child with special needs in Norway, Früh et al (2016) point out that immigrant parents struggle to get access to the benefits and services they are entitled to, because of language barriers and limited knowledge of the Norwegian welfare system. Moreover, the study shows that the mothers' motivation for participating in paid work is high, but that limited relevant education and work experience, in addition to language problems, impair job opportunities.…”
