Innoversity in knowledge-for-action and adaptation to climate change: the first steps of an 'evidence-based climatic health' transfrontier training program

Abstract: It has become increasingly clear to the international scientific community that climate change is real and has important consequences for human health. To meet these new challenges, the World Health Organization recommends reinforcing the adaptive capacity of health systems. One of the possible avenues in this respect is to promote awareness and knowledge translation in climatic health, at both the local and global scales. Within such perspective, two major themes have emerged in the field of public health res… Show more

“…There has always been a tension between reductionist biomedical and broader public health paradigms. Yet medical education has been through several transformations and there is considerable momentum for a new transition, 10 , 39 , 61 , 62 with approaches such as a three-pillared framework of basic, clinical and systems science, 57 or combined medical and public health qualifications. 63…”

“…Furthermore, universities have been identified as potential catalysts for innovation and progress on climate change and health. 39 , 71 , 83 As a confluence of expertise, universities can facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration in teaching and research, 84 which can provide graduates with diverse skills and perspectives necessary to address complex problems such as climate change. 39 …”

“…Of those articles mentioning a single concept, the definitions were provided in 6 out of 109 (6%) [ 30 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 ], 10 out of 91 (11%) [ 28 , 44 , 45 , 46 , 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 ], and 9 articles out of 16 (56%) [ 53 , 54 , 55 , 56 , 57 , 58 , 59 , 60 , 61 ] mentioning multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinarity, respectively ( Table 2 , Figure 3 ).…”

“…In the definitions of transdisciplinarity, the integration of the skills, perspectives, and expertise of different disciplines [ 9 , 58 , 60 , 82 , 84 ] and the coherent whole emerging from these efforts as an outcome also featured prominently. In addition to the characteristics mentioned in the definitions of interdisciplinarity, however, authors also emphasised the “participatory” nature of transdisciplinary work [ 57 , 60 , 84 ] and its conceptualisation as knowledge co-production or knowledge translation [ 59 , 60 ].…”

“…Involved research teams embraced the trans-frontier vision of innoversity and trans-frontier knowledge-for-action, by emphasizing the importance of shared responsibility and complex collaboration, objectives, and matched agenda of the teamwork. This project aimed to adjust several entities to climate change: the public health sector, public mental health sector, and the public service sector via complex collaborations on evidence-based climatic health training (Lapaige and Essiembre, 2010).…”
