Despite the existing contributions on the economic and social relevance of industrial clusters in the firms' internationalization, research on these topics is still scarce and, particularly, controversial at an empirical level. This study contributes to the extant literature on international development, proposing to explore the impact that industrial clusters and innovation activities exert in the most relevant temporal dimension of the firm's foreign expansion—internationalization speed (earliness and postentry speed). Further, this research seeks to ascertain whether the relationship between industrial clusters and internationalization speed is significantly different for low and high‐technology businesses. Based on a sample of 3,537 Portuguese firms, collected in the SABI database, the results suggest that firms belonging to industrial clusters and developing innovation activities tend to exhibit a higher postentry speed, not observing the same impact in terms of early internationalization. The findings also reveal that low‐technology firms have an additional incentive to become involved in industrial clusters, since these actions will be reflected to a greater extent in their postentry speed than those of high‐technology firms.

The paper presents findings on how innovative capacity influences sustainable food tourist inflows to African-ethnic Restaurants (AERs) in East Africa. Informed by the Dynamic Capabilities Theory, a multiple case study approach was adopted to capture what the owner- managers bring to the research inquiry. This helped in an in-depth understanding of patterns and relationships of meanings. The study reveals that continuous food quality improvement, adoption of new technology, innovative authenticity assurance, customer involvement and personalized service, and engagement of dynamic tour and travel agents are strategically relevant in influencing sustainable food tourist inflows to AERs. Continuous use of popular flavourings, fresh materials, and adoption of best culinary practices such as “marinating” are a major reason for tourists’ re-visits to AERs. The findings further reveal that adoption of new technology for fast food preparation, attractive food presentation, and apposite service temperature lead to tourist attraction. It also emerged that the ability to respond to guest unique requests and specification is a valuable capability. In addition, the use of traditional paraphernalia, indigenous ingredients and, hiring creative traditional chefs is critical in retaining food tourists. Moreover, provision of diversity through an elaborate African buffet, eclectic cuisine, and regular menu reviews was found to be vital in attracting visitors to AERs. Thus, the study through innovative capabilities-based model, provides a theoretical explanation for food tourists’ influx to AERs, and presents implications for policy and practice.

The performance of international small and medium‐sized enterprises: Overview and future research directions

Our study aims to assess the state of knowledge on the performance of international small and medium‐sized (SME) firms, and formulate a relevant research agenda. We review 231 contributions published between 1993 and 2019, and identify the main theoretical debates, key success factors and measures of international SME performance, and the theoretical and methodological approaches used in this literature. Based on our analysis, we propose a definition of performance factors according to the theoretical frameworks identified, and the overall determinants and performance measures identified. For future research, we suggest a more holistic theoretical and empirical perspective, a qualitative and longitudinal approach, and a greater focus on developing country SMEs.
