The milling process is one of the most used processes in the manufacturing industry. Milling, as a process, as evolved, with new machines and methods being employed, in order to obtain the best results consistently. Milling tools have also seen quite an evolution, from the uncoated high-speed steel tool, to the now vastly used, coated tools. Information on the use of these coated tools in recent scientific researches was collected. The coatings that are currently being researched are going to be presented, highlighting some novel advances in the nanocomposite and diamond coatings area, as these coatings are seeing a growing use in the industry, with very satisfactory results, with performance and tool-life increase. Wear mechanism of various types of coatings are also a popular topic on recent research, as the cutting behavior of these coated tools provides valuable information on the tool’s-life. Furthermore, analysis of these mechanisms enables for the selection of the best coating type for the correct application. Recently, the employment of coated tools paired with sustainable lubrication methods as seen some use. As this presents the opportunity to enhance the coated tool’s and the process’s performance, obtaining better results, in terms of better tool-life and better surface finish quality, in a more sustainable fashion.

Indexable multi-insert milling cutters are the most economical and productive face milling tools. In case of the Inconel alloy machining there are some specific cutting conditions and strategies that influence cutting tool life and surface quality. When the indexable cutting inserts are used, it is recommended to use always down milling and avoid positioning cutter on-centre. For the tool entry is recommended reduce feed rate and use roll on strategy. When different tool dimeters are used there are different cutting conditions which is influenced by the principal cutting edge angle and it influence cutting tool life and tool wear character. This study is focused on the influence of the three different cutter diameter on the cutting tool life when the Inconel 718 is machined. For the tests different cutter diameters with same rounding cutting inserts are used. The trajectory of the movement are simulated for all diameters by the 3D view and on the base of it the real cutting conditions are calculate and setup for the practical experiment. During the tests, the cutting forces are monitored as well as cutting inserts tool wear (2D visualization and 3D visualization). For the comparing of the tool wear character the difference analyses is used and 2D cuts are made for the evaluation of the general tool wear parameters.

The stability of the machining process is depend on the machined materials properties. But the material properties are influence by the heat treatment process and in this case it is forging. For these study three different company made the "same" forging process and then the material properties are evaluated and their influences on the cutting process were monitored. For the tests the steel DIN 18 CrNiMo 6-7 was used. This material is typically used for the gear wheels where the cutting tools by tool steel is used for the machining. So for the tests the mills from tool steel were used and during the machining the cutting tool life and cutting forces were monitored.
