Innovative seismic resistant structure of shield building with base isolation and tuned-mass-damping for AP1000 nuclear power plants

Abstract: Purpose Seismic isolation, as an effective risk mitigation strategy of building/bridge structures, is incorporated into AP1000 nuclear power plants (NPPs) to alleviate the seismic damage that may occur to traditional structures of NPPs during their service. This is to promote the passive safety concept in the structural design of AP1000 NPPs against earthquakes. Design/methodology/approach In conjunction with seismic isolation, tuned-mass-damping (TMD) is integrated into the seismic resistance system of AP10… Show more

“…For the analysis of the spatial structure of the prefabricated structure, this chapter will adopt the mode analysis method based on the response spectrum theory, that is, it will use the free vibration equation of the multiparticle system to solve the physical vibration period and the mode of operation of the structure, and then, using the theory of decomposition and response spectrum acquires the horizontal seismic action of the structure [19]. Comparing the free vibration equation of the "series-parallel multiparticle system" with the free vibration equation of the "seriesparallel multiparticle system," it has the following characteristics:…”

“…Most of the nonlinear displacement and energy dissipation occur at the IIS isolators, while the rest of the IIS NPPs remain close to elastic behavior. Because the displacement and yield of U portion are concentrated at the IIS isolators (Hou et al, 2019), and U portion behaves as a rigid body, the analytical model of U portion is represented by the mechanical parameters of IIS isolators. In another words, the stiffness k U ;Bn and the damping ratio ξ U ;Bn are equal to the k iso and ξ iso of IIS isolators, respectively.…”

“…According to the similarity theory and model test technology combined with the existing engineering examples, the dynamic characteristics of the tunnel and the influence motion parameters of the bridge structure caused by different grounds are considered. Hou proposed at the same time that the characteristics of the shaking table model test method for bridge and tunnel covered structure are analyzed, and compared with other research methods, and the test platform and test method are introduced [ 2 ]. The preliminary test results show that this method can simulate the seismic dynamic response, damage and catastrophic behavior of bridge, and tunnel covered structures under weak surrounding rock conditions.…”
