Innovative Digital Tools and Surveillance Systems for the Timely Detection of Adverse Events at the Point of Care: A Proof-of-Concept Study

Abstract: Mobile applications are taking data standards to the point of care, enabling clinicians to ascertain potential adverse events in the ED setting and during inpatient follow-up. Compliance with Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC) data standards facilitates data interoperability according to regulatory requirements.

“…Children are the most avid transmitters of respiratory viral infections, and the information gained from syndromic surveillance in children's hospitals can complement decentralized sentinel surveillance systems in a meaningful way [133]. With the advent of rapid diagnostics and mobile health applications, it has now become possible to monitor virological and clinical end points in real time [134][135][136][137][138][139][140].…”

“…Advances in information technologies permits to collect PROMs by means of electronic tools, namely electronic PRO (ePRO). The development of such tools allowing the integration of PROMs with patient-related data from hospital and laboratory sources warrants a follow-up at several levels, also at distance, with data that can be automatically transferred in real time to a computer server [99][100][101][102]. Moreover, all clinically relevant actions based on PRO scores can be added to the patient's electronic medical record, thus allowing the health-care providers to be always aware of patient conditions and to move smoothly from an active treatment to palliation.…”

“…Solution : We developed the ViVI Automated Case Classification Tool (VACC-Tool™), a mobile application allowing doctors to assess the patient's status at the point of care – thereby comparing the disease presentation to multiple case definitions at the same time. 2 Most immunizations are performed during early childhood. This is why the VACC-Tool™ was specifically designed to perform across the pediatric and adult age spectrum.…”
