To meet global food demand, reduce waste, and minimise environmental impact, the agricultural sector must improve its current practices on soil amendment, fertiliser encapsulation, and seed and crop protection. Super absorbent polymers (SAPs) are a class of polymeric materials that can absorb and retain large quantities of liquids/aqueous solutions compared to their own mass. Typically, SAPs are cross-linked to form three-dimensional hydrophilic networks, commonly known as hydrogels. Although SAPs can be synthesised from both synthetic and naturally sourced materials, for agricultural applications they are generally composed of synthetic polymers, due to their advantageous properties. These include higher water absorption rate and capacity, low cost, availability, durability, and mechanical performance. However, many of these systems utilise polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyacrylamide (PAM) monomers which may have toxic effects on the nervous and respiratory systems of humans and animals. To ensure sustainable agricultural practices and maintain healthy long-term crop output, synthetic SAP usage must be greatly reduced. This review article aims to investigate alternative natural SAPs for agriculture and critically rationalise their adoption into the industry. Specific applications investigated include (i) soil amendment, (ii) fertiliser encapsulation, (iii) seed coating, and (iv) crop protection.

As an efficient means of material carrying, multilayer capsules are widely used in medicine, agriculture, food safety and other fields. Here, we report a kind of temperature‐triggered multilayer capsule with chitosan‐sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (CS‐SDBS) as the shell and gelatin bead containing α‐cyclodextrin (α‐CD@gelatin) as the core. The α‐CD@gelatin/CS‐SDBS multilayer capsules can simultaneously encapsulate various substances, such as drugs, fluorescent materials, and nanoparticles. The encapsulated substances do not interfere with each other because they are located in different layers. Both the temperature‐sensitive property of gelatin and the host‐guest interaction between α‐CD and SDBS are utilized to achieve temperature‐controlled release of substances in the multilayer capsules. The release rate can be adjusted by the α‐CD amount in the gelatin beads. The controlled drug release and chemical detection of the multilayer capsules are studied with sodium salicylate, iodine, and purple cabbage pigment as the carriers. The results show that the α‐CD@gelatin/CS‐SDBS multilayer capsules have excellent capabilities of encapsulation and controlled release, which are beneficial for their application in the fields of substance encapsulation, drug‐controlled release, and chemical detection.

Hydrothermal carbonization is one of the new ways to produce valuable products from waste materials. The aim of this study was to develop a novel method for the production of hydrochars from brewery residues for agricultural applications. Waste materials treated at 140 °C, 170 °C, and 200 °C were used as a source of renewable nitrogen and as delivery agents of fertilizer microelements (Cu, Mn, and Zn). HTC materials were enriched with nutrients using an innovative spray sorption method. The surface texture was characterized by the nitrogen adsorption technique, functional groups were identified (FT-IR), and thermogravimetric analysis of the materials was performed. Preliminary germination tests have shown phytotoxic effects at doses greater than 20% (relative to plant nitrogen requirements) for unenriched hydrochars. To minimize inhibition of plant growth, air aging tests were conducted for 30 days, followed by successive drying at 110 °C for 72 h. It was observed that the higher the temperature of the carbonization process, the faster the desorption of components in a solution simulating soil conditions (NaNO3) occurs. The pot tests on cucumber (Cornichon de Paris) showed that the biometric parameters of the plant (stem length and root ball parameters) for the hydrochar obtained at 170 °C were higher than in the group fertilized with mineral fertilizer. Twice the fresh plant mass was noted for this group compared to the reference. In addition, the study recorded a particular increase in nitrogen content in plants fertilized with a 150% dose of enriched hydrochar, where the element content increased by about 100% compared to the group with mineral fertilizer applied (100% dose). The study shows that properly prepared hydrochars from brewery waste offer great potential as a nitrogen source and micronutrient delivery agents for the agrochemical sector. Graphical Abstract
