Innovation of oxygen indicator for packaging leak detector: A review

Abstract: Oxygen is one of the factors causing the food product damage. Therefore, vacuum packaging or modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) is an effective solution offered. However, there is always a risk of leakage in the package especially in the packaging process, in the distribution process, and by the insect or rodent damage. Therefore, an oxygen indicator that helps retailers and consumers to detect leaks and to prevent them from buying leaking products is created. Its working principle is to show a color change t… Show more

“…It is also theoretically conceivable to utilize this solution to determine whether there is air (oxygen) in space [14]. It may be an effective air (oxygen) detector that is used in the packaging of food and beverages, which helps to prevent the product from going bad [15]. Detection of oxygen pollution is also required to halt the corrosion that is occurring inside the pipeline system [16].…”

“…Examples of external indicators are time indicators, temperature indicators [1], microbial growth indicators [2][3][4][5]. While examples of internal indicators are oxygen indicators [6], carbon dioxide indicators, pathogenic bacteria indicators and microbial growth indicators [7].…”

“…[2,4] In addition to the increasing development of high-performance packagings, there are also a large number of studies that deal with the development of intelligent packagings. [5,6] This involves the development of intelligent systems, consisting of sensors and indicators, respectively, that can, on the one hand, record the actual state of the packaging throughout the entire supply chain (via sensors) and, on the other hand, provide an irreversible indication of changes regarding the food quality (via indicators). [1,2,[5][6][7] Sensors are described as instruments that are able to detect an event or a change in their environment, to localize it, or even to quantify it in order to send signals that this change can be investigated in terms of its physical or chemical nature.…”
