“…With an attempt to promote whole-person development, Hong Kong underwent a structural education reform in the past decade (Curriculum Development Council, 2001). A major change in the English language subject is the inclusion of elective modules in the senior secondary curriculum to encourage students to learn English through a variety of experiences, such as drama, poems and songs, popular culture, debating and social issues (Benson and Patkin, 2014; Carless and Harfitt, 2013). The Curriculum Development Council (CDC) and Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA) (2007) stipulated that English language teaching should go beyond the traditional focus on grammar and vocabulary and provide ample opportunities for students to use English for communication in a wide range of authentic contexts.…”
