This research appraised the effects of recycling senilia senilis waste seashells as a full or partial substitution for natural coarse aggregate (granite) in eco-friendly concrete production. The design mix employed a 1:2:4 concrete mix ratio for M25 grade, a w/c ratio of 0.5, river sand as fine aggregate, ordinary Portland cement (OPC) as a binder, and varying proportions of crushed seashells and granite as coarse aggregates (0:100, 10:90, 20:80, 30:70, 40:60, and 50:50). Laboratory tests revealed that workability requirements were only met with a 10%-40% seashell addition, workability decreased with increasing seashell percentages. The compressive strength increased with curing age but decreased with the additions of seashells. The seashell-modified mixes failed to reach the design target strength for M25 concrete. Nonetheless, the 10 and 20% seashell-modified mixes achieved the required strength for M20 concrete. Split tensile strength increased with curing age for all mixes, the seashell-modified mixes yielded slightly reduced tensile strength values compared to the unmodified mix at all curing stages. However, the 10%, 30%, and 40% seashell-modified batches attained recommended split tensile strength values on the 28th day. Furthermore, high correlations were observed between the datasets of the some of the measured parameters, and variations for Split tensile strength as a function of seashell percentage and compressive strength were developed discretely by fitting the experimental data to the numerical models. Relationships were also developed for compressive strength and workability as functions of seashell percentage. Eco-friendly building construction recycling waste seashells is encouraged as it offers positive economic and environmental prospects.

The construction industry heavily relies on cement, which contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions during production and depletes natural resources. Moreover, the decomposition of organic waste is a significant source of emissions that contribute to environmental damage due to the lack of proper management. However, biochar and charcoal derived from organic waste can be utilized as admixtures in concrete to minimize these emissions. This study investigates the mechanical properties of concrete with partial cement replacement using biochar and charcoal separately. The aim is to determine the optimal percentages of cement replacement and the effectiveness of using these byproducts to manage organic waste and reduce emissions. The report compares the behavior and suitability of biochar and charcoal in concrete based on the mechanical strength of the resulting concrete. It suggests that both materials exert distinct effects on the properties of concrete, with the optimal replacement percentage variations. However, it is noteworthy that biochar outperforms charcoal in all mechanical aspects of concrete and significantly improves flexural strength. However, more research is needed to determine the effect of different biochar on flexural strength in concrete. Recent research has demonstrated that incorporating biochar and charcoal as cement admixtures holds significant promise in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the negative environmental impact of organic waste in the construction industry.

One of humanity's oddest features is that it uses a tremendous number of resources, even non-renewable ones, while leaving indications of pollution in its wake. The most important environmental threat associated with its production is not the depletion of non-renewable raw resources, but rather the environmental effects of its extraction, which include massive deforestation and topsoil degradation. As a result, new and inventive construction materials or substitute materials are required to address this issue. The usage of natural fibre honeycomb sandwich structure (NFHSS) composite material as an alternative building material has various advantages over standard building materials, including decreased weight, increased strength, and durability, improved thermal and acoustic insulation, and more design flexibility. This research analysis the flexural strength of the NFHSS to be used as potential flooring panel or slab as an alternative building material. Following the flexural strength analysis, a fractography study has been conducted in order to identify the failure mode of the NFHSS. ASTM D7249 was used to execute the flexural strength of the material on a Universal Tester Machine. The maximum deflection that the material can withstand before failing is 0.5mm at a force of 4.52kN. The stiffness of this material was determined to be 2.26 kN/mm, and it was classified as ductile. This study's findings support the idea that weak interfacial bonding causes fibre and matrix breakdown are the main causes of the material failure.
