The study aims to examine the role of innovation capabilities and the impact of knowledge transfer and open innovation on the SMEs’ performance in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Although previous research on open innovation has been conducted in Indonesia, it has not been specific to this region, and there are variables that still need to be explored concerning improving SMEs’ performance. Therefore, this study aims to fill this gap through research. An online questionnaire with a five-point Likert points was distributed to respondents who work actively and occupy functional positions in SMEs in Yogyakarta. A total of 202 respondents contributed to this study. Data were analyzed using SPSS and PLS-SEM with the SmartPLS tool. The results of this research reveal that the variables of knowledge transfer and open innovation positively influence SMEs performance and Innovation capabilities have a role in this relationship. Openness to innovation triggered by innovation capabilities will later encourage business practitioners to continuously innovate in their business performance, such as innovation in improving product quality. In this case, businesses need to consider the critical role of knowledge transfer in improving business performance. This study contributes to enriching the literature related to the concept of open innovation and SME performance. Additionally, the results of this study provide valuable insights for business practitioners to implement these three variables to enhance of their business performance.

Innovative design on the shop floor of the Saint-Nazaire Airbus factory

In this study, we examine innovative design practices on the Saint-Nazaire Airbus factory shop floor. The engineering and manufacturing engineering departments are in charge of the design of products and their industrialization, even though the factory is usually seen as a place for manufacturing, rather than design. However, there is also design activity in a factory that is devoted to the optimization of manufacturing processes. In this study, we highlight an alternative form of design that relies on a collective exploratory approach. A total of 30 projects from the Saint-Nazaire Airbus factory were selected and analyzed. Of these, two were selected as case studies to illustrate the factory's different design methods. Subsequently, quantitative analysis provided evidence of the existence of two design regimes: closed prescription and expandable prescription. The resulting solutions were examined, and it was found that designs under the expandable prescription regime provided more robust long-term solutions. This study offers new perspectives for reexamining innovation in manufacturing and exploring design activity on factory shop floors.

The impacts of ambidextrous innovation on organizational obsolescence in turbulent environments

PurposeThe authors aim to measure the effects of ambidextrous innovation and its mix strategy on organizational obsolescence with the moderating roles of environmental turbulence.Design/methodology/approachHierarchical regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses on the basis of the survey data of 198 firm employees in China.FindingsBoth exploratory and exploitative innovations significantly restrain organizational obsolescence. The complementary strategy of ambidextrous innovation is negatively correlated to organizational obsolescence, but the impact of balanced strategy is not significant. Environmental turbulence negatively moderates the relationship between exploratory innovation and organizational obsolescence, whereas it cannot moderate the effect of exploitative innovation.Originality/valueThe empirical and conceptual findings have important implications for organizations countering obsolescence through the construction of a mix strategy of ambidextrous innovation. This study enriches and extends obsolescence theory by introducing the joint mechanism of ambidextrous innovation and environmental turbulence.
