Innovation and the circular economy: A systematic literature review

Abstract: The circular economy emerged as an alternative model to the linear system, which now appears to be reaching its physical limitations. To transition to a circular economy, companies must not only be aware of but also engage in more sustainable practices. For such a transition, companies must rethink and innovate their business models and the ways they propose value to their clients while simultaneously considering environmental and social facets. This systematic literature review sought to map out from the comp… Show more

“…The so-called multilayer structures usually consist of up to 12 or even more layers of different polymers and/or coatings, in either symmetrical or asymmetrical assemblies, specially designed to be impervious to the penetration and migration of gases and moisture [6]. Nevertheless, multilayer packaging materials have created severe problems related to the disposal of plastics after single short use due to the polymers used are non-biodegradable and their layers are extremely difficult to separate and recycle [7]. In fact, in developed countries, an important part of municipal solid waste consists of polymer materials derived from multilayer structures [8].…”

“…From a theoretical standpoint, we build on the classic studies on technological shift and innovation [17] (Dahmén 1950;Dosi 1982;Dosi et al 2000;Hughes 1992; Tushman and Anderson 1997; Schumpeter 1934) to explore the notion of structural tensions and put this in the empirical context of the transition to a CLSC for EV lithium-ion batteries. Further, by adopting a holistic view, we show the interconnection between the way in which studies on sustainability transition [26,42], Dahl and Markard [16] and circular economy [15,67] approach the role of actors in managing structural tensions. We claim that in order to articulate the complexity of managing structural tensions in the transition process, it is important to analyze and compare strategies pursued by actors in different positions along the value chain.…”

“…Although criticized for being unclear and fuzzy [29,35,36], the CE has been widely adopted by firms to explore its economic, social, and environmental benefits. Some studies on innovation and industrial transformation (e.g., [15,67]) argue that the transition toward CE may be viewed as creating structural tensions within the established linear economic system that push radical structural changes at various levels, in particular at the supplychain level.…”

“…In this line of thought, this study sought to fill a gap in the scientific literature on the role of innovation in the transition from a linear model to a circular one, as also shown by Suchek et al (2021) and Donner et al (2020). We know that changing the way of conducting productive activities requires changes in mindset and ways of doing things.…”
