Adapting emerging digital communication technologies for resilience: evidence from Nigerian SMEs

Drawing on the Diffusion of Innovation Theory, this study explores how emerging digital communication technologies (EDCT) affected SMEs’ resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. We employed an inductive and qualitative approach to investigate 42 SME operators in a weak institutional developing country—Nigeria. Our findings show that EDCT played a critical role in activating SMEs’ resilience during the crisis through four drivers: facilitating connections and bonding with staff, clients, and suppliers; enabling collaborations; activating process diversification; and enhancing supply chain flexibility. Furthermore, we highlight the distinct ability of Nigerian SMEs to buffer themselves against misinformation arising from the use of EDCT. This study sheds light on an EDCT Diffusion Model for resilience.

Entrepreneurship constitutes a means of integration for migrants and is a fundamental key to human development. Under the theoretical need to know the entrepreneurship of Venezuelan migrants in Mexico, the general objective was to describe Venezuelan migrant entrepreneurship in Mexico. The study was approached from the constructivist paradigm and the ethnographic approach, which allowed a deep knowledge of migrant entrepreneurship to be analyzed from the Theories of Social Sciences. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews guided during direct field observation from a non-probabilistic intentional sample of eight Venezuelan migrant entrepreneurs established in Mexico. The selection parameters responded to the availability of the participants; the data were reviewed through an iterative analysis based on constant observations, thus guaranteeing methodological integrity. Indeed, there are remarkable coincidences between the results and the literature review. It was identified that Venezuelan migrants have ventures by opportunity, which are successful in the Mexican context, providing them with multiple opportunities to develop their competencies and even overcome difficulties.

This study of the literature looks at the connection between small and medium-sized businesses' (SMEs) business performance and their accounting procedures in the service sector. The study employs a systematic review methodology that includes a thorough screening procedure to find studies that match the inclusion criteria and a thorough search of academic databases using pertinent keywords. The data analysis entails a thematic examination of the chosen studies, with an emphasis on the kinds of accounting procedures that SMEs employ, the performance metrics that are employed to gauge the success of their businesses, and the degree to which accounting procedures and performance are correlated. The practical consequences imply that financial accounting methods can help SMEs in the service sector enhance their business performance. Nonetheless, it's important to give management accounting techniques a thorough evaluation. Investigating the moderating factors—such as the external environment and resource availability—that influence the relationship between accounting methods and business performance is one suggestion for further research.
