Innervation of the Human Uterine Artery and Contractile Responses to Neuropeptides

Abstract: The intrinsic innervation of the human uterine artery was investigated histochemically, and the motor responses to some of the demonstrated peptides and other humoral factors were studied on isolated vascular preparations. There were nerves with specific immunoreactivities for tyrosine hydroxylase, dopamine Β-hydroxylase, neuropeptide-Y (NPY), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and peptide histidine methionine, and enzymatic reactivity for acetylcholine esterase. The most effective stimulator of smooth muscle… Show more

“…It has been shown that arginine vasopressin (AVP) induces contraction of the human uterine artery (Svane et al, 1990;Ekesbo et al, 1991;Nelson & Suresh, 1992;Kostrzewska et al, 1993), as opposed to some other arteries in which AVP evokes relaxation (Katusic et al, 1984;Seino et al, 1985;Evora et al, 1993).…”

“…Dopamine stimulates uterine contractility in rabbits, rats and women in early pregnancy (L a l and Sharma 1983;Sizov 1992;Urban et al 1982;Ekesbo et al 1991). It blocks muscle relaxation effect caused by releasing relaxin during parturition (Sizov 1992).…”
