Innervation of the Cerebral Dura Mater

Abstract: The trigemino-cardiac reflex during Onyx embolization for dural arteriovenous fistula may be caused by mechanical or chemical stimulus to the terminals of the unencapsulated Ruffini-like receptors stemming from A-axons in the dural connective tissue at sites of dural arteries and sinuses. Slow A (Aδ) and fast A (Aβ) neurons may play a role in the stimulus afferent pathway due to their higher mechanosensitivity and chemosensitivity. These afferent pathway nerves are cholinergic innervations of the dura mater, w… Show more

“…15,20 If a connection between the PANs innervating the IWAEC and the dura mater really exists, it is most likely constituted by neurons in the same ophthalmic region, so we investigated the somatotopic organization of the DACF in rats first. Nine days after application of FAST Dil on the DACF, the red FAST Dil-labeled neurons could be observed in the medial part of the ipsilateral TG (Fig.…”

“…With regard to the innervation of the dura mater, the afferent nerve fibers for the anterior membrane originate from the ipsilateral trigeminal ganglion . These nerve fibers course alongside the branches of the MMA along the dura . In this patient, embolization of the MMA led to an acute resolution of headaches within 24 hours – possibly due to deinnervation of the nerve fibers along the dura secondary to ischemia – well before the hematoma radiographically resolved.…”
