“…The first experiments (4,24) did in fact agree quite well with these predictions. Inter mediate coupling calculations (67,69,70) of the spectra are generally in still better agreement with experiment.…”

“…That this interpretation of the reaction mechanism is realistic at high energies was first demonstrated by Chamber lain & Segre (1) and Cladis, Hess & Moyer (2) and later verified by Wilcox & Moyer (3). A more complete utilization of the quasi-free proton-proton scat tering reaction was made in 1957 by Tyren, Maris & Hillman (4). This experi ment was designed to make a complete determination of the kinematics of the proton-proton collision which is supposed to take place in the nucleus, and the results not only verified the approximate validity of the direct-inter action interpretation, but also demonstrated that this kind of reaction could be used as a powerful tool for investigating nuclear structure (5), in particular the single-particle aspects of it.…”

“…In their quasi-free scattering experiments, Tyren et al (258,261) and others find that plots of the differential cross sec tion d(J'/(dnldn2d£) versus excitation energy £ of the residual nucleus (see Fig. la) do indeed show strong peaks that apparently support the approxi mate usefulness of ajj -coupling shell model of nuclear structure.…”

“…Only five variables need be fixed to specify a three-particle breakup completely (aside from polarization) if the intrinsic state of each particle is specified ; the sixth variable is used to select one particular excited state of the residual nucleus (as nearly as possible). The first experiments of this latter type were those of Tyren et al (258,261). (99) and Gottschalk & Strauch (100) have explored the five-dimensional parameter space of the C 1 2(p, 2p) Bll reaction (with B l l left mainly in its ground state) at about 150 MeV thoroughly enough to establish a domain of angles and energies of the outgoing protons within which they believe quasi-free scattering to be the dominant process.…”
