Innate immune genes of the chicken MHC and related regions

Abstract: Compared to the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of typical mammals, the chicken BF/BL region is small and simple, with most of the genes playing central roles in the adaptive immune response. However, some genes of the chicken MHC are almost certainly involved in innate immunity, such as the complement component C4 and the lectin-like receptor/ligand gene pair BNK and Blec. The poorly expressed classical class I molecule BF1 is known to be recognised by natural killer (NK) cells and, analogous to mammal… Show more

“…The signal of balancing selection detected in complement component gene C5AR2 contradicts the results of previous findings that report positive selection shaping the diversity of this highly variable innate immunity gene family (Kosiol et al, 2008 ; Webb et al, 2015 ). The complement complex is not only part of the innate immune system, but also a part of the major histocompatibility complex (Kaufman, 2022 ). Therefore, it may also undergo balancing selection typical for the crucial genes in this region (Hedrick, 1998 ).…”

“…Because BLB1 and BLB2 are responsible for producing the MHC class II molecules, they are also vital for activating/initiating adaptive immunity in chicken ( Worley et al, 2008 ; Kaufman, 2021 ). The exon two of both BLB1 and BLB2 contributes to the fabrication of the peptide-binding groove/peptide binding region of the MHC class II molecules.…”

“…It possesses classical MHC class I and II genes that produce MHC class I and class II molecules, which are extremely important biological agents in the recognition of foreign pathogenic peptides. It also carries BG family genes and C-type lectin like loci ( Kaufman et al, 1999 ; Shiina et al, 2007 ; Kaufman, 2021 ).…”
