“…This was based on a study of anterior kidney leukocytes in Gulf Killifish (Roszell and Rice 1998), wherein eosinophilic granular cells and macrophages were observed to be more common and to have greater phagocytic capacity than neutrophils.…”

“…In addition, NCC, thought to be the counterpart of mammalian natural killer cells, have also been characterized in some fish species (Dalmo et al. 1997; Roszell & Rice 1998; Evans, Leary & Jaso‐Friedmann 2001; Ruiz, Leary & Jaso‐Friedmann 2001; Taylor, Jaso‐Friedmann, Allison, Eldar & Evans 2001). NCC and an NCC receptor (NCCRP‐1) have been characterized in tilapia and catfish (Jaso‐Friedmann, Leary & Evans 1997, 2001; Evans et al.…”

“…Anterior kidney and spleens were collected, pushed through 80 x mesh screens in Hanks balanced salt solution (166 mM NaCl, 6.5 mM KCl, 6.8 mM glucose, 0.05 mM KH 2 PO 4 , 0.07 mM Na 2 HPO 4 , pH 7.2), hereafter referred to as HBSS. Cells were centrifuged over Percoll (Sigma Chemical Company, St. Louis MO USA) gradients of 1.050 and 1.080 g ml −1 as previously described for gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis [32], a closely related species of the mummichog. This isolation procedure concentrates macrophages and granulocytes.…”
