Innate and Adaptive Immune Systems in Physiological and Pathological Pregnancy

Abstract: The dynamic immunological changes occurring throughout pregnancy are well-orchestrated and important for the success of the pregnancy. One of the key immune adaptations is the maternal immune tolerance towards the semi-allogeneic fetus. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of what is known about the innate and adaptive immunological changes in pregnancy and the role(s) of specific immune cells during physiological and pathological pregnancy. Alongside this, we provided details of remaining quest… Show more

“…The strongest association is located on the PHTP1 gene, encoding a phosphatase not previously linked to obesity. To our knowledge, this is the first study investigating this question in pregnant women, and our results suggest that during pregnancy the relationship between BMI and DNA methylation might be altered, potentially due to immune-metabolic changes typical of pregnancy 34,35 . Previous studies that attempted to investigate the link between BMI and DNA methylation during pregnancy focussed on candidate genes encoding leptin and adiponectin and found associations 36 .…”

“…In addition, as pregnancy is a unique immune state in which particular responses may be dampened, IgG levels during pregnancy could differ from pre- to post-pregnancy. However, this is less likely given that the immune response during pregnancy skews toward antibody production and away from a cellular response ( 28 ). Third, as this analysis only included 37 MAR+ and 37 MAR- mothers and only some had IgG reactivity to the different infectious agents, our sample size in these comparisons was very small.…”

“…Maternal immune tolerance to the fetus is a prerequisite for successful pregnancy 42,43 . The paternal antigens can be expressed by the fetus, and the maternal immune system's response to fetal antigens may contribute to the pathogenesis of RPL 44 .…”
