Inkjet-Printed Porous Silver Thin Film as a Cathode for a Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell

Abstract: In this work we report a porous silver thin film cathode that was fabricated by a simple inkjet printing process for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cell applications. The electrochemical performance of the inkjet-printed silver cathode was studied at 300-450 °C and was compared with that of silver cathodes that were fabricated by the typical sputtering method. Inkjet-printed silver cathodes showed lower electrochemical impedance due to their porous structure, which facilitated oxygen gaseous diffusion and ox… Show more

“…The single cell with a conventional BCZYYb electrolyte shows similar performance to reported electrolyte‐supported single cells at 300 °C. [ 44 ] According to the literature, the performance of YSZ‐supported single cells could be improved by optimizing the electrode materials. Single cells’ performance increased when the electrode changed from dense silver to porous silver, as shown in the insert figure.…”

“…77,78 Additionally, it has excellent oxygen solubility and permeability, two critical properties required to achieve a fast oxygen exchange. 79 The role of silver is to facilitate the O 2 molecule dissociation and reduction. When O 2 molecules are adsorbed on a silver surface, there is an electron transfer from silver to the p* orbitals of the O 2 molecules.…”

“…The self-assembled AgNWs mesh electrodes show low sheet resistance (8 Ω sq −1 ) with enhanced transparency in the ultraviolet and infrared regions. Yu Chen-Chiang et al [19] introduced a porous silver thin-film cathode fabricated by a simple ink-jet-printing process for lowtemperature solid oxide fuel cell applications. However, the products obtained from these studies still have defects such as high sheet resistances and strict requirements to the precursors.…”
