“…McCarroll also found that the active duty females married to civilian males had the highest risk of becoming a victim of unilateral abuse compared to both active duty males married to civilian females and dual military couples. Two earlier clinical studies (Cantos, Neidig, & O'Leary, 1994;Langhinrichsen-Rohling, Neidig, & Thorn, 1995) of active duty personnel with civilian spouses found high rates (e.g., 83%) of bidirectional violence among the couples. However, the findings did not differentiate active duty males from active duty females.…”

“…However, several studies indicate that females are as likely to use aggressive behaviours as males (Afifi et al, 2010;Cantos et al 1994;Korman et al, 2008;Straus, 2008;Swan et al 2008). While some suggest reciprocal, or bi-directional, IPV is more common than a consistent pattern wherein one person is either the victim or the perpetrator of violence (Korman et al, 2008), conceptual (Stark,2009) and measurement concerns favour gender asymmetry (Taft et al 2001).…”

“…Hamby and Sugarman (1999) proposed that males might be more apt to use "malicious" tactics (e.g., belittling partner) while females might be more likely to endorse "minor tactics (e.g., swearing at partner). Studies have suggested that female-to-male aggression tends to be less severe (less likely to produce injury) (Archer, 2000;Cantos et al, 1994;Cascardi et al, 1992), that women experience greater fear in conflict situations (Jacobson et al, 1994), and that female-to-male aggression is more defensive in nature (Jacobson et al, 1994). Thus, future studies should examine more specifically types of aggressive behaviors and their consequences, including measurement of emotional and motivational factors associated with various forms of aggression.…”
