Injuries in people with self‐reported epilepsy: A population‐based study

Abstract: SUMMARYPurpose: To identify the prevalence of injuries in people with epilepsy (PWE) in the general population. Method: We examined the prevalence of injuries obtained through the previously validated, door-todoor Canadian Community Health Survey (CHS) (n = 130,882). The 12-month weighted prevalence of injuries serious enough to limit normal activities was calculated for people with epilepsy and for the general population. Among those reporting injuries, variables of interest were compared in PWE and in the ge… Show more

“…4,5,7,14,16,17 In a population-based study of seizure-related injuries amongst adults and adolescents with epilepsy, the cumulative risk of seizure-related injury at 10 years was 14.6% (CI 9.5–19.3). 14 Further, less than 5% of injuries over 12 months were attributable to seizures in a prospective study of injuries in children with epilepsy.…”

“…1 These may be due to interictal EEG epileptiform discharges occurring in the absence of obvious clinical seizure activity. 2,3 PWE are more likely to die as a result of an accident than non-epileptic patients, and a person with epilepsy has a 5% chance per year of visiting an emergency department due to a seizure-related injury. 4,5 …”

“…In a Canadian population-based study, patients with epilepsy appeared to have more domestic-related injuries, although sports-related injuries occurred in these patients less often for the unfortunate reason of them having fewer opportunities to participate in sport, which again impacts on their health. 33 The biggest difference in comparison with the general population can be seen in terms of premature death with a four to eightfold higher risk of premature death. 34,35 One of the reasons for the greater risk of premature death in people with epilepsy is the raised risk of suicide in those patients with comorbid psychiatric disease.…”
