Initiator Concentration Effect on Rheological Properties of a pH-Sensitive Semi-IPN Hydrogel Based on Konjac Glucomannan and Methacrylic Acid

Abstract: A pH-sensitive semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) hydrogel based on Konjac glucomannan(KGM) and methylacrylic acid(MAA) was prepared by free radical polymerization at different concentrations of initiator potassium persulfate (KPS) in presence of crosslinker N,N-methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBA). The chemical structure and rheological properties of hydrogels were characterized by FT-IR and rheometry, respectively. In addition, the swelling behavior of the hydrogels were studied in buffer solution at… Show more

“…Therefore, the pH‐responsive polymers can be used as drug‐delivery systems as they can conventionally undergo a volume change in response to acidity stimuli. For example, the pH‐sensitive polymer, poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA), has distinct volume enlargement when the pH value is increased above the acid dissociation constant of the ionizable groups (the p K a of COOH is about 4.25) . Recently, smart pH‐sensitive nanocomposites have been prepared by hybriding MSNs with pH‐sensitive polymers, which show both high drug‐loading capacity and controlled drug‐release performance in response to pH changes …”
