-(Vascular system and tiller bud development control in small-grain cereals). The reasons for tiller absence and/or low survival were studied by analyzing vascular connections between the tiller and other plant parts. Experiments were conducted on open air and growth chamber conditions with wheat genotypes, IPF-49865 (uniculm), EMBRAPA-16 and BR-23 (multiculm); oats, UFRGS-10 and UFRGS-15; and barley, FM-519. Analyses were made on main culm and primary tiller foliar development, number of primary and secondary tillers and vascularization and tiller vascular connection with the rest of the plants. Vascular connections did not explain tillering inhibition, since all tillers were vascularly connected to the plant.RESUMO -(Sistema vascular e controle do desenvolvimento de perfilhos em cereais de estação fria). As causas da ausência e/ou baixa sobrevivência dos perfilhos foram estudadas pela conexão vascular entre os perfilhos e o resto da planta. Foram conduzidos ensaios em telado e câmara de crescimento com genótipos de trigo, IPF-49865 (unicolmo), EMBRAPA-16 e BR-23 (multicolmo), de aveia, UFRGS-10 e UFRGS-15 e de cevada, FM-519. Avaliaram-se o desenvolvimento foliar do colmo principal e dos perfilhos primários, o número de perfilhos primários e secundários, o número de perfilhos férteis e a vascularização e conexão vascular dos perfilhos com o resto da planta. A conexão vascular poderia explicar a inibição dos perfilhos, pois todos estavam conectados vascularmente com o resto da planta.Key words -Tiller bud, Triticum aestivum L., Avena sativa L., Hordeum vulgare L. IntroduçãoOs cereais de estação fria cultivados no Brasil como trigo, aveia, cevada e centeio desenvolvem muitos perfilhos mas esses, na maioria das vezes não são férteis. Dessa maneira, o potencial de perfilhamento dessas espécies não está sendo expresso em rendimento de grãos. Por isso, tornam-se necessários estudos que revelem quais os mecanismos que controlam o desenvolvimento de gemas axilares em gramíneas para, futuramente, manejar geneticamente esse caráter e melhorar o rendimento de grãos dos cereais de estação fria.A conexão vascular entre o eixo principal da planta e os brotos laterais é um aspecto importante para o crescimento destes, considerando que o transporte de material orgânico e inorgânico dentro da planta é realizado pelos tecidos vasculares. Segundo McCall (1934) interrupções nas conexões vasculares entre o eixo principal de plantas de trigo e as gemas poderiam estar inibindo o desenvolvimento de gemas laterais.

.-The components of the vascular systems in the male floret and the female floret of Raddia are described from reconstructed serial, transverse sections. Squat tracheary elements, sieve elements, and intermediary cells comprise the systems. The male floret has six and the female floret three collateral bundles in the rachilla at the floret base that become interconnected into a lower sieve-element plexus with accompanying tracheary elements. Besides contributing to the lower plexus, the rachilla bundles serve as the traces for the lemma and palea. That bundle (bundle 3) which is the trace for the lemma median contributes most of the sieve and tracheary elements to the lower plexus. Supernumerary bundles are associated with bundle 3. Rising in the rachilla from the lower plexus is the upper plexus of sieve and tracheary elements. The circular form of the upper plexus of the male floret is influenced by the two traces from each of the anterior lodicules and by each trace from the three stamens. The trace from the posterior lodicule of the male and female florets does not influence the upper plexus. The bi-arcuate form of the upper plexus of the female floret is influenced by the two, more posterior traces from the anterior lodicules. The three staminodia in the female floret do not influence the upper plexus because they are avascular. At the pistil base is a massive amphicribral bundle, the pistil plexus, that sends down vascular prongs and lobes to merge with the upper and lower plexi. Two posterolateral (stylar) collateral bundles merge with the pistil plexus in a gynobasic manner. A placental bundle ascends from the posterior of the pistil plexus, merges with the chalaza, and exceeds the tip of the ovule before ending in a stylar core. Components of the floret vascular system of Raddia confirm the Olyreae as a tribe of the Bambusoideae that should not be placed in the subfamilies Festucoideae, Oryzoideae, or Panicoideae.

The University of Chicago Press is collaborating with JSTOR to digitize, preserve and extend access to International Journal of Plant Sciences.All procambial leaf traces were mapped through the seven disks of insertion constituting a shoot tip of Costus curvibracteatus, a species of the monocotyledonous gingers. Leaf traces form during seven waves of procambial initiation in each of the successive disks. Each wave generates a complement of isolated procambial segments that link into the various procambial leaf traces. The major leaf traces form in an acropetal dot-todot sequence involving certain waves in at least five successive disks. The first intermediate traces involve different waves in fewer disks. Gaps occur between the proximal and distal procambial components that must be bridged in order to complete the leaf traces. Two of the waves furnishing procambia for the first intermediate traces come from a meristematic cap that then goes out of function to become the intermediate zone. It separates the inner system of procambia related to the major leaf traces from an outer system related to the intermediate leaf traces. At the completion of the inner system, a horizontal procambial network dedifferentiates from the ground parenchyma of the inner system to form the inner nodal plexus, while an outer nodal plexus forms during the last wave in the outer system. The isolated origin of procambial leaf traces in this species of ginger suggests that isolated procambial initiation occurs in many monocotyledonous shoots.
