Initiating the First DTP Vaccination Age-appropriately: A Model for Understanding Vaccination Coverage

Abstract: Early in-office visits seem to make DTP1-AA vaccination more likely. These rates may be amenable to intervention by increasing early visits and reducing DTP1-AA missed opportunities. Introduction of the hepatitis B vaccine to the recommended series may place more emphasis on early visits and result in increased DTP1-AA rates and, ultimately, higher vaccination coverage rates.

“…Immunization coverage among children can be influenced by many factors, including those related to access to health care, knowledge, attitudes and practices of providers and parents, and sociodemographic characteristics. [18][19][20][21][22][23] In examining the independent association between age at administration of the first dose and completion of the 3-dose hepatitis B vaccine series and the 4:3: 1:3 vaccine series, we were unable to adjust for all of these factors. Since we used SUDAAN for multivariate analysis, we also did not have a goodness-of-fit measure.…”

“…Childhood immunization is recognized as the most effective medical means to control infectious diseases; it is cost-effective, reduces morbidity, and prevents further outbreaks of infectious disease 1. Although immunization is remarkably effective, children are still becoming infected with preventable diseases, resulting in debilitating disorders and even death.…”
