Initial systemic inflammatory state perturbs exercise training adaptations in elite Taekwondo athletes

Abstract: PurposeThis study examined ten-week TKD-specific training effects on aerobic capacity, body composition, hormone responses and hematological parameters in elite TKD athletes with varied initial inflammatory states.MethodsTwenty-two elite college TKD athletes were divided into two groups according to their initial neutrophils-to-lymphocytes ratio (NLR) values: Low NLR (N = 11, 9M/2F, age: 21.6 ± 1.0 yrs; NLR: 1.3 ± 0.2) and High NLR (N = 11, 8M/3F, age: 22.0 ± 0.7 yrs, NLR: 2.5 ± 1.3), and participated in a 10-… Show more

“…The VO 2 max of male Serbian international taekwondo athletes, according to the study of Cubrilo et al [19], was lower than our findings (44 ± 3 mL•kg -1 •min -1) Another study reported higher values; Italian international taekwondo players had a VO 2 max value of 63.2 ± 6.1 mL • kg -1 • min -1 [16]. A wide range of values has been reported for both national and international groups [8,10,12,15,40,82]. Aerobic fitness may affect performance indirectly by helping recovery between the attacks [60].…”

“…In the present study, IL-6 appeared to decrease in TRE and increase in ND (even if not significantly). Moreover, the ratio of neutrophils-to-lymphocytes (NLR) is a biomarker of systemic inflammation largely used in clinical practice, which correlates with the circulating level of C-reactive protein (CRP) [ 52 , 53 ]. In our study, both groups presented a decrease in neutrophils and an increase in lymphocytes after 4 weeks of treatment, whilst the NLR seems to be more affected by the TRE compare to ND (TRE -39%; ND − 30%).…”

“…Neutrophils are rapidly infiltrated into damage tissue after exercise-induced muscle damage and evoke initial local inflammation (Kanda et al., 2013). Moreover, the NLR and PLR are widely applied to reflect the systemic inflammatory status in athletes and patients (Turkmen et al., 2013; Lou et al., 2015; Liao et al., 2016; Chen et al., 2017). In this study, we found the NLR and PLR were significantly higher in STC than in TMSK following the consecutive tasks, indicating that the STC provoked even greater systemic inflammatory responses (Figures 4D,F).…”
