Initial results from a dynamic coupled magnetosphere‐ionosphere‐ring current model

Abstract: [1] In this paper we describe a coupled model of Earth's magnetosphere that consists of the Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry (LFM) global magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulation, the MIX ionosphere solver and the Rice Convection Model (RCM) and report some results using idealized inputs and model parameters. The algorithmic and physical components of the model are described, including the transfer of magnetic field information and plasma boundary conditions to the RCM and the return of ring current plasma properties to the … Show more

“…The focus of this paper has been the evolution of fields calculated from the simulation model using measured solar wind input from ACE, Wind and ARTEMIS spacecraft. The LFM-RCM model couples the Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry (LFM) global MHD code with the Rice Convection Model (RCM) of the ring current and includes dipole tilt and a Kp = 5 non-evolving embedded plasmasphere for storm time simulations (see Pembroke et al, 2012;Hudson et al, 2014a).…”

“…RCM has an option of incorporating dipole tilt which is enabled for all runs presented in this paper. Twoway coupling between LFM and RCM is discussed in Pembroke et al (2012).…”

“…Third, we include new simulation results using the BATS-R-US-CRCM model Glocer et al, 2013) to physically interpret the local and global observations. Recently, significant progress has been made in ring current and global magnetosphere modeling with the development of so-called "twoway coupled models" Pembroke et al, 2012;Glocer et al, 2013;Meng et al, 2013). We demonstrate how this modeling approach helps to infer systemlevel dynamics, connect multipoint observations in different domains, and analyze global magnetosphere dynamics and coupling with the ionosphere.…”

“…The details of this coupling, such as partially reflecting ionosphere or the coupling of Alfvén and compressional waves in a curved geometry, are tempting for future work, where advanced coupled modeling [e.g., de Zeeuw et al, 2004;Pembroke et al, 2012] may be useful.…”
