Initial performance of the COSINE-100 experiment

Abstract: COSINE is a dark matter search experiment based on an array of low background NaI(Tl) crystals located at the Yangyang underground laboratory. The assembly of COSINE-100 was completed in the summer of 2016 and the detector is currently collecting physics quality data aimed at reproducing the DAMA/LIBRA experiment that reported an annual modulation signal. Stable operation has been achieved and will continue for at least 2 years. Here, we describe the design of COSINE-100, including the shielding arrangement, t… Show more

“…The best-fit indicates a 210 Pb activity of 0.34±0.04 mBq/kg. Although such a 210 Pb activity is high compared to 5-30 µBq/kg in DAMA/LIBRA crystals [3], it is lower than other current NaI-based dark matter experiments [7][8][9][10].…”

“…COSINE appeared as a joint effort between the KIMS collaboration and the DM-Ice experiment carried out in the South Pole. They operate 8 NaI(Tl) detectors from Alpha Spectra company (106 kg in total) immersed in 2200 l of liquid scintillator at the Yangyang underground Laboratory in South Korea [15,16]. The Physics run started in September 2016 with a threshold at 2 keV ee .…”

“…The NaI(Tl) crystal is procured from Alpha Spectra Inc., who provided similar quality crystals of the COSINE-100 experiment [14]. Typical low-radioactivity crystals from Alpha Spectra Inc. exhibit 15 photoelectrons per keV light output.…”
