The annual modulation of scintillation event rate observed by the DAMA/LIBRA experiment has been a long-standing controversy in the quest of the direct detection of dark matter. The effort to definitively confirm or refute the annual modulation has turned out to be challenging due to the lack of NaI(Tl) crystals with high enough radio-purity. Most recently, we successfully grew a 6-kg ingot free from contamination during growth, from which a 3.4-kg crystal scintillator was made. The 39 K concentration in the final crystal is estimated to be 4.3±0.2 ppb, unprecedented for NaI(Tl) crystals. The 210 Pb activity is estimated to be 0.34±0.04 mBq/kg via α counting of 210 Po, among the lowest of currently-running NaI-based dark matter experiments except DAMA/LIBRA. More importantly, the techniques and protocols we have developed will further contribute to the growth of higher purity NaI(Tl) crystals for dark matter searches.

Small scale direct dark matter search experiments

Experiments based on noble liquids and solid state cryogenic detectors have had a leading role in the direct detection of dark matter. But smaller scale projects can help to explore the new dark matter landscape with advanced, ultra-sensitive detectors based on recently developed technologies. Here, the physics case of different types of small scale dark matter experiments will be presented and many of them will be reviewed, highlighting the detection techniques and summarizing their properties, results and status.

Scintillating NaI(Tl) crystals are used for various rare decay experiments, such as dark matter searches. The hygroscopicity of NaI(Tl) crystal makes the construction of crystal detectors in these experiments challenging and requires a tight encapsulation to prevent from air contact. More importantly, in a low radioactivity measurement, identification of external radiations and surface contamination is crucial to characterize the origin of total crystal radioactivities.Studies for NaI(Tl) crystal encapsulation with active organic scintillator vetoes have been performed to mitigate the above-mentioned issues simultaneously.A bare crystal is directly coupled with liquid and plastic scintillators to tag external radiations that penetrate from the outer part of the crystal. We report the pulse shape discrimination for organic scintillator pulses from those of the crystal scintillator in a single detector setup which makes external gammas identifiable and long-term stability tests of the detector setup.
