Initial measurements on Pixel Detector modules for the ATLAS upgrades

Abstract: Abstract-Sophisticated conditions in terms of peak and integrated luminosity in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will raise the ATLAS Pixel Detector to its performance limits. Silicon planar, silicon 3D and diamond pixel sensors are three possible sensor technologies which could be implemented in the upcoming Pixel Detector upgrades of the ATLAS experiment. Measurements of the IV-behavior and measurements with radioactive Americium-241 and Strontium-90 are used to characterize the sensor properties and to under… Show more

“…A viable solution is to realize a "3D guard-ring" made of both junction columns and ohmic columns, in order to drain any parasitic current coming from the edge. In fact, this approach is pursued at CNM-IMB with good results [8]. What we conceived is an alternative solution, the so called "slim edge", that is more easily scalable to smaller sizes, as will be detailed in the next paragraph.…”
