Initial factors predicting functional performance in patients with traumatic tetraplegia

Abstract: SummaryThe authors present a prospective analysis of the functional outcome in 99 patients with traumatic tetraplegia consecutively admitted to the Pellegrin Hospital (University Hospital, Bordeaux, France). There was a 29% death rate. Eighteen months after injury, 33 % of the patients were dependent (not able to perform activities of daily living without the presence of a helping individual), 38% were independent. Two predictors of independence (age and initial Yale Scale Score) were found by a statistical an… Show more

“…16 Daverat et al studied 188 consecutive SCI patients hospitalised between 1982 and 1985, of whom 149 survivors (99 TSCI patients) were subjected to a subsequent survey. 17 In particular, this survey emphasised initial prognostic factors relating to functional independence and quality of life. 17 Recently, Barbin and co-workers interviewed 291 SCI patients (of whom 37.6% were TSCI) living at home.…”

“…Previous studies have documented several significant predictors of mortality in traumatic SCI. The predictors include increasing patient age 3,8,12 , and the completeness of the lesion 3,12 . In our study also, the mean age of non‐survivors (52.3 years) was much higher than that of the study population (34.1 years).…”

“…In 1946, Guttmann quoted a mortality rate of 80% for traumatic quadriplegia 1 . Contemporary articles on SCI mortality have given rates that vary between 2.4%, and 29% 2–12 .…”
