Initial Experience With a New Refractive Rotationally Asymmetric Multifocal Intraocular Lens

Abstract: The new refractive rotationally asymmetric intraocular lens provided good range of vision for near, intermediate, and distance. Long-term follow-ups are necessary to evaluate the performance of this intraocular lens.

“…Interestingly, these findings are consistent with previous studies that found a good range for intermediate vision with SBL-3 [15,25]. is fact may be attributed to either the smooth optical transition zone between the two areas of the MIOL or some introduction of aberration with this design, providing a larger depth of foci [26]. e RMS of intraocular aberrations, intraocular HOAs, coma, and trefoil aberrations was significantly greater in the SBL-3 group than in the SN6AD1 group in our study.…”

“…ere was no statistically significant difference in mean scores between the two groups. A previous study [26] indicated that the overall satisfaction of patients with SBL-3 was high despite some night vision phenomena. However, SBL-3 appeared to provide a better range of visual acuity but had blur vision at distance and near subjects compared to that of SN6AD1 due to the introduction of much undesired intraocular aberrations.…”

“…Asymmetric IOL designs have also been more recently introduced and provide good vision from distance to near, with contrast sensitivity clinically equivalent to monofocal IOL implantation, generally with less dysphotopsia than similar near powered concentric multifocal IOL designs (Moore et al, 2017;Venter et al, 2014). Smaller pupils have been shown to have a significant negative impact on subjectively reported quality of vision with asymmetric IOLs (Pazo et al, 2017).…”

“…Commercial solutions are already available in the form of contact lenses (e.g. Gelflex Linear Plus Bifocal, PureSite Revision SSG) and intraocular lenses (i.e., M‐plus family from Oculentis, Berlin, Germany and the Lenstec SBL‐3 from Lenstec, Inc., Christ Church, Barbados) . However, although very recent studies have explored the preference of orientation under monocular vision in small samples of subjects, there is no quantitative assessment of the impact of orientation of angular multifocals on the achieved binocular performance.…”
