Initial development of a set of introgression lines from Solanum peruvianum PI 126944 into tomato: exploitation of resistance to viruses

Abstract: A set of introgression lines from S. peruvianum PI 126944 into the genetic background of cultivated tomato (S. lycopersicum) is being developed. Several generations were derived from three interspecific hybrids previously obtained. A lot of crosses and embryo rescue were required to obtain until the third backcross, due to the high incompatibility existing between tomato and PI 126944. Crosses between F1 plants allowed the obtaining of a pseudo-F2 generation. The same procedure was followed until pseudo-F6 gen… Show more

“…Despite the high incompatibility, accessions of S. chilense and S. peruvianum have been well utilized as the most resistant sources. Exploitation of TYLCV resistance in S. peruvianum began from the incorporation of the resistance from accession PI 126935 [133] and PI 126944 [113,117,134]. Resistant S. chilense accessions (LA1932, LA1938, LA1960, LA1969, LA1971, LA2779 and LA3473) have been intensively applied into breeding practices [92,114,[135][136][137].…”

“…Three interspecific hybrids were obtained between cultivated tomato NE-1 and PI 126944, and a set of introgression lines into the genetic background of tomato is being developed from these ( Picó et al, 2002 ). In some of these generations the resistance level against TYLCV and TYLCSV has been assessed ( Julián et al, 2013 ). Interspecific hybrids between cultivated tomato ( S. lycopersicum ) and S. chilense accessions (i.e., LA1932, LA1938, LA1959, LA1960, LA1963, LA1969, LA1971, LA2779, LA3473, UPV20306, UPV20328, and UPV20329) were made leading to different types of populations ( Picó et al, 1999c , 2002 ; Pérez de Castro et al, 2013 ).…”
