Initial determination of DNA polymorphism of some Primula veris L. populations from Kosovo and Austria

Abstract: Primula veris L. (Primulaceae) is a long lived perennial and well known pharmaceutical plant, widely collected for these reasons in almost all SE Europe and particularly in Kosovo. The aim of the study is to determine molecular polymorphism of cowslip (P. veris L.) populations from Kosovo. DNA extracted from leaves were  investigated in details for presence of polymorphism. RAPD analyses were conducted using 20 different short primers. Genomic DNA amplification profiles were analyzed and processed using data l… Show more

“…Our between-population and within-population variation proportions, 18.53% and 81.47%, respectively, very closely matched the results of Reisch et al [34] (20.59% and 79.41%, respectively) for populations located near Obersdorf (northern calcareous Alps, Germany) and were only slightly different from those of Sørensen et al [35] (33% and 67%, respectively) obtained for populations collected throughout Denmark. Similar results were obtained for other Primula species: P. apennina [37] and P. veris [38]. Both basic genetic indexes used in our study show that the Polish population PL is the most variable of the four studied.…”

“…Primula veris L. (Primulaceae, also called cowslip) is a distylous outcrossing grassland herb characterized by declining number and size of populations in recent years. This has caused an increased interest in the species, with the goal of saving its contribution to biological diversity (Kéry et al, 2000;Brys and Jacquemyn, 2009;Berisha et al, 2015). One of the reasons causing the reduced number of cowslip populations may be very low level of genetic variation found in natural populations (Morozowska and Krzakowa, 2003).…”
