Initial clinical results with a fusion prototype for mammography and three-dimensional ultrasound with a standard mammography system and a standard ultrasound probe

Abstract: Background: Combinations of different imaging techniques in fusion devices appear to be associated with improvements in diagnostic assessment. Purpose: The aim of this study was to test the feasibility of using an automated standard three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound (US) device fused with standard mammography for the first time in breast cancer patients. Material and Methods: Digital mammograms and 3D automated US images were obtained in 23 patients with highly suspicious breast lesions. A recently developed f… Show more

“…3 ). With technical advances like the fusion of several imaging methods 92 , 93 , automated assessment of mammographic density 94 and diagnostic accuracy of mammography 95 as well as the integration of big data and machine learning into patient and tumor assessments 96 , 97 such individualized screening strategies seem to be feasible and several studies are already ongoing 98 , 99 , 100 , 101 , 102 .…”

“…Moro et al, 2020 [4] combined Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and ultrasonography (US) images to improve cervical cancer assessment. Emons et al 2018 [5] also developed a prototype of a combination between mammography and US images to improve breast cancer detection. Berg et al 2004 [6] compared the evaluation of breast images from clinical examination using US, mammography, MRI, as well as multimodal and single modality.…”
