Initial assessment of reuse of sustainable wastes for fibreboard production: the case of waste paper and water hyacinth

Abstract: In this early study, new cement-bonded bi-composite fibreboard (FB) was made from water hyacinth (WaHy) and waste paper (WP). Ordinary Portland cement (PdCe) used as a binder was mixed with other two additives: gypsum plasters (GyPl) and wood ash (WdAh), in defined proportions to form bonding matrices. The WP and WaHy were pre-treated and a linked process was developed for the mixing and consolidation steps. The FBs produced were based on different proportions of composites, binder, and additives mixed. The FB… Show more

“…Soeprobowati et al (2012) stated that the eutrophic condition of Rawapening Lake has occurred since 1967, and it is very difficult to control the growth of water hyacinth because of its fast growth rate and ability to store seeds scattered by flooding (Júnior and Carvalho 2019). Water hyacinths also have seeds that have a dormancy up to 15 years, implying that the seeds have long-lasting regeneration ability (Ojo et al 2019).…”

“…The addition of binder into biobriquette enhances its properties [30]. Mixing was thoroughly done by hand while adding water of about 2litres of water [4] per 5 kg mixture until a satisfactory mixture was achieved.…”

“…Water-resistance capacity is the measure of water absorptive capacity when the biofuel briquette is immersed in water. This parameter examines the compressive strength of the briquette machine and also the nature of the material used in the manufacture of the biofuel briquette, which are key factors in determining the handling characteristics of the biofuel briquettes [4]. High absorption of water may lead to significant (2) Relaxation Ratio = (Compressed Density)∕(Relaxed Density).…”

“…The control of water hyacinth growth is difficult due to the extremely rapid pace of weed growth and its ability to deposit the seed scattered by the flood (Júnior and Carvalho, 2019). The water hyacinth seeds have the ability to dormancy for up to 15 years, a potential ability to reproduce in a sustainable manner (Ojo et al, 2019).…”
