Inhibitory sensory preconditioning

Abstract: In two experiments rats were preexposed to neutral stimuli. Both experiments used a between-subjects design in which a paired group was preexposed to intermixed presentations of A --> Band AX, and an unpaired control group was preexposed to intermixed presentations of A, B, and AX. After the conditioning of B, in Experiment 1, conditioned responding to X was acquired more slowly in the paired than in the unpaired group. Furthermore, in Experiment 2, X reduced conditioned responding to a separately trained exci… Show more

“…If so, perhaps the reliance on reinforcement and unconditioned stimuli in standard prototypes of learning should be questioned. A more fitting prototype may be sensory preconditioning, where a sequence of contiguous elements is experienced first (A → B), before the later element is subsequently paired with an unconditioned stimulus (B + food), thereby allowing the learning of the pre-reinforced association to be assessed (test A; e.g., Blaisdell et al 2009; Sawa et al 2005; see Espinet et al 2004, for an example of inhibitory sensory preconditioning).…”

“…Figure 27 shows the output CRs of all three phases, as confirmed by [ 62 , 63 , 64 , 65 , 66 , 67 , 68 , 69 ]. The effect of preconditioning on the CR value of the last trial in the third phase is clear.…”

“…In addition, as in the previous task, lesioning the CHCQ model had no effect on the compound preconditioning task. Generally, the results of the compound preconditioning task have been confirmed by the experimental research of [ 68 , 69 , 71 ].…”
