Inhibitory Effects of Thai Essential Oils on Potentially Aflatoxigenic Aspergillus parasiticus and Aspergillus flavus

Abstract: The antiaflatoxigenic and antifungal activities of essential oils EOs of finger root Boesenbergia rotunda L. Mansf. , pine Pinus pinaster , rosewood Aniba rosaedora , Siam benzoin Styrax tonkinensis , Thai moringa Moringa oleifera , and ylang ylang Cananga odorata were tested for Aspergillus parasiticus and Aspergillus flavus in potato dextrose broth. Aflatoxin B 1 AFB 1 was extracted from culture using a QuEChERS-based extraction procedure and analyzed with high performance liquid chromatography HPLC coupled … Show more

“…One of them is to protect the food materials with safe chemical compounds. These compounds include the active constituents of herbs, essential oils, pesticides, microbial metabolites, and newly synthesized derivatives as inhibitors [41][42][43][44]. Therefore, the search for new compounds that are effectively antiaflatoxigenic, biodegradable, and toxicologically safe has motivated many studies.…”

“…Moreover, inhalation of ylang-ylang essential oil decreased anxiety and increased the social and cognitive abilities of autism-like rats 233 . Other studies suggested antiviral 238 and antifungal 239 effects of ylang-ylang essential oil. Finally, the possibility of application against insects, especially mosquitoes, should be mentioned 227 , 228 , 229 .…”

“…These EOs can be recovered and reused from citrus waste and are eco-friendly fungicides that could also be profitable for the agriculture sector [ 214 ]. The EOs extracted from Cananga odorata showed antifungal activity against A. parasiticus and A. flavus at 4 mg/mL [ 215 ]. The shelf life of brown rice was enhanced by Michelia alba oil in combination with linalool and caryophyllene at different ratios, while a 1:10 ratio showed the strongest antifungal activity against A. flavus [ 216 ].…”
