Inhibitory Effects ofGlycyrrhiza glabraand Its Major Constituent Glycyrrhizin on Inflammation-Associated Corneal Neovascularization

Abstract: Glycyrrhiza glabra L. (Leguminosae) is widely used in folk medicines. Glycyrrhizin, an active compound of G. glabra, possesses anti-inflammatory activity. This study investigates the G. glabra methanol extract and glycyrrhizin for the treatment of corneal neovascularization (CNV). G. glabra was extracted in 70% aqueous methanol. Phytochemical tests, thin layer chromatography (TLC), and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were used for the analysis of chemical composition. The topical solution of G. g… Show more

“…Licorice has long been used for treatment of inflammatory, and the major bioactive compounds are flavonoids and triterpenoid saponins [24]. In this study, the anti‐inflammatory effects of extracts on LPS‐induced NO production in the RAW 264.7 macrophage cell were assessed (Figure 5).…”

“…IP injection results in the presence of GL in tendon. Three hours after IP injection, significant amounts of GL, quantified using thin layer chromatography (62), are detected in mouse tendons. Amount of GL is minimal in mouse tendons without IP injection of GL, but there is 13-fold increase of GL in PT and 6.8-fold increase in AT.…”

“…In experimental and clinical studies, licorice has been shown to have a variety of pharmacological properties, including anti-in ammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-asthmatic and anti-cancer activities, as well as immune regulation, protection of the stomach, the liver, the nerves, and the heart. [9][10][11][12][13][14][15] In recent years, some biochemical, molecular, and cellular mechanisms of licorice and its active components have also been con rmed by experimental studies. [16,17] licorice is one of the key herbs used in Chinese medicine.…”
