Inhibitory effects ofAphanizomenon flos-aquaeconstituents on human UDP-glucose dehydrogenase activity

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the in vitro inhibitory effects of the edible microalga Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA) on human UDP-a-D-glucose 6-dehydrogenase (UGDH) activity, a cytosolic enzyme involved both in tumor progression and in phytochemical bioavailability. Methods: Both the hydrophilic and ethanolic AFA extracts as well as the constitutive active principles phycocyanin (PC), phycocyanobilin (PCB) and mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) were tested. Results: Among AFA compone… Show more

“…For example, Scoglio et al . (2016) found that the former was 888 times more potent for inhibiting UDP-α-D-glucose 6-dehydrogenase activity [ 51 ]. This enzyme plays a role in the progression of prostate [ 52 ], breast [ 53 ], ovary [ 54 ], and epithelial cancers.…”

“…It is also rich in pigments such as carotene, beta-carotene, and chlorophylls [ 12 ]. Of particular relevance are its phycocyanins, which have a particular structure [ 13 ] and have proven to have significant antioxidant [ 14 ], anti-inflammatory [ 15 ], and antiproliferative [ 16 ] properties.…”

“…Similarly, the freshwater unicellular blue-green microalga Aphanizomenon flos-aquae , which grows spontaneously in Upper Klamath Lake in Oregon, USA, is also consumed as a nutrient-rich food source and for its health properties. Similar to the Arthrospira species, A. flos-aquae is an important source of the pigment C-phycocyanin; hence, demonstrating a strong antioxidant potential [ 32 , 33 ].…”
