Inhibitory Effect of Rikkunshi-To, a Traditional Chinese Herbal Prescription, on Tumor Promotion in Two-Stage Carcinogenesis in Mouse Skin.

Abstract: We report the inhibitory effect of topical application of extracts of a traditional Chinese herbal prescription on 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced inflammation in mice. Methanol and water extracts obtained from 22 traditional Chinese herbal prescriptions were assayed and their inhibition ratios calculated. In general, the methanol extracts produced more effective inhibition than the water extracts. Of the various traditional Chinese herbal prescriptions, the methanol extract of Rikkunshi-to … Show more

“…Therefore, foods and food additives may prove to be important for the chemoprevention of cancer. Our pre vious studies have demonstrated that oral administration of cepharanthine can inhibit tumor promotion during twostage carcinogenesis in mouse skin [6], In addition, Rikkunshi-to, a traditional Chinese herbal prescription, inhib its tumor promotion in two-stage carcinogenesis in mouse skin [7], Mice were treated with 0.1 and 0.02% Monascus pigment as their sole source of drinking water starting 1 day after initiation by DMBA and continuing throughout the tumor promotion regimen until the end of the study. Oral administration of Monascus pigment inhibits tumor promotion by TPA in DMBA-initiated mice.…”

“…These drugs are used in the treatment of immunosuppression caused by anticancer drugs and poor health after surgical treatment. In addition, Rikkunshi-to and Zyuzen-taiho-to inhibited the tumor promotion in two-stage carcinogenesis in mouse skin [21,22]. P. cocos was found to be an important component in these pre scriptions.…”

“…In our study, methanol extract was suitable for extraction of the active components than water extract 9) . The reason that used methanol is because we expected active component to a low molecular compound.…”
