Inhibition of the Occurrence and Development of Inflammation-Related Colorectal Cancer by Fucoidan Extracted from Sargassum fusiforme

Abstract: Fucoidan has many biological activities, including the inhibitory effect on the development of various cancer types. This study showed that lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation in FHC cells (normal human colonic epithelial cells) could be reversed using fucoidan at different concentrations. The fucoidan-induced anti-inflammatory effect was also confirmed through in vivo experiments in mice. Compared to the mice of the model group, the ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes in feces increased and the diversity of… Show more

“…Previous studies have shown that IL-10 reduction could inhibit glomerulosclerosis in the spontaneous focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) rat model, while IL-10 knockout enhanced renal fibrosis in the renal injury model . Consistent with this, our data showed that the levels of IL-10 were higher in the fucoidan intervention groups than in the DM group and accompanied by the improvement of interstitial fibrosis. , However, IL-10 in the DM group was higher than that in the NC group, which may be related to the compensatory anti-inflammatory reaction in early stage DN. , Therefore, these results suggest that fucoidan can improve the inflammatory response and fibrosis in early stage DN by regulating the MAPKs signaling pathway.…”

“…In fact, the structure of fucoidan from Fucus vesiculosus is the best-studied as relatively simple, which contains a backbone of α-(1 → 3)-linked fucose and α-(1 → 4) linked fucose residues. , It was reported that fucoidan derived from F. vesiculosus has excellent immunoregulatory activity and anti-inflammatory activity. , Many studies have reported that plant polysaccharides can effectively alleviate UC by modulating gut flora, as it can be an energy source for gut microbiota to metabolize bioactive metabolites involved in regulating host metabolism. ,, However, there is limited study on the effect of fucoidan derived from F. vesiculosus on UC, and the interactions between fucoidan and gut microbes in colitis mice remain elusive.…”

“…Recent studies showed that Muribaculum is a major mucin monosaccharide forager, which could hinder Clostridioides difficile colonization and impair pathogen colonization to maintain intestinal homeostasis at the same time. 47 Bifidobacterium and Alloprevotella were positively correlated with acetic acid. Previous studies have shown that Bifidobacterium are beneficial intestinal bacteria and an increase in their numbers may restore and maintain normal gastrointestinal function.…”
