Inhibition of root meristem growth by cadmium involves nitric oxide‐mediated repression of auxin accumulation and signalling in Arabidopsis

Abstract: The root is the first plant organ to get in contact with the toxin cadmium (Cd), which is a widespread soil contaminant. Cd inhibits the growth of the primary root, but the mechanisms underlying this inhibition remain elusive. In this study, we used physiological, pharmacological and genetic approaches to investigate the roles of nitric oxide (NO) and auxin in Cd-mediated inhibition of Arabidopsis thaliana root meristem growth. Our study demonstrated that in the first 12 h of exposure, Cd inhibits primary root… Show more

“…Changes in Aux/IAA stability and, subsequently, the auxin perception level appear to represent a general strategy by which plants interplay with phytohormones and respond to environmental cues (Yuan et al, 2013;Bailly et al, 2014;Katz et al, 2015;Liu et al, 2015;Yuan and Huang, 2016). Treatment with SA reduces auxin responses by stabilizing Aux/IAA proteins (Wang et al, 2007).…”

“…The above results show that PAT is required for the MHPP-induced inhibition of PR growth. PAT is mediated by auxin influx carriers in the AUX/LAX family and efflux carriers in the PIN family (Péret et al, 2012;Yuan et al, 2014;Yuan and Huang, 2016). Thus, we examined whether MHPP treatment also affects the expression of auxin carriers in roots.…”

“…The zone between two white arrows in images include both the apical meristem and the transition zone (Verbelen et al, 2006; Baluska et al, 2010). Root meristem size was quantified as previously described (Liu et al, 2015; Yuan and Huang, 2016). Results presented are average values of more than 30 seedlings per treatment from three independent experiments.…”

“…Exogenous Ca 2+ can ameliorate Cd’s inhibition of Arabidopsis root growth by counteracting effects of NO on auxin homeostasis (Hu et al, 2013; Li P. et al, 2016; Yuan and Huang, 2016). Cd also interferes with auxin homeostasis in barley roots (Zelinova et al, 2015).…”
