Inhibition of oral carcinogenesis by glutathione

Abstract: Forty young adult Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) were divided into four groups of 10 animals each. In Group 1 (tumor control), the right buccal pouches were painted three times per week with a 0.5% solution of 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) in heavy mineral oil (USP) with a no. 4 sable brush. In Group 2 (experimental group), the right buccal pouches were painted with DMBA, as in Group 1. In addition, Group 2 received 1 mg of reduced glutathione in 0.5 ml of mineral oil three times per week on da… Show more

“…The decreased concentrations of GSH during ageing of human organism were observed [27]. Interestingly, the inhibitory effect of dietary glutathione supplementation on the oral cancerogenesis in rats was demonstrated [28]. Similarly to the presented study, Doğru-Abbasoğru et al [24] also observed the decreased content of sulfhydryl groups in plasma of PC patients when compared with BPH patients.…”

“…GSH acts as first line of defense against oxidative stress [13]. Few studies have shown a reduced occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon induced oral cancer in experimental animals fed with diet rich in glutathione [14,15]. GSH detoxifies carcinogens by…”

“…A very important molecule needed in conjugation reactions is glutathione (GSH), a small peptide composed of three amino acids -cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine. It plays a central protective role against the damaging effects of bacteria, viruses, pollutants, toxic metabolites [23] and free radicals [24].…”
