Inhibition of GLUT2 transporter by geraniol from Cymbopogon martinii: a novel treatment for diabetes mellitus in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

Abstract: Objective To isolate and identify the bioactive component from Cymbopogon martinii having GLUT2 transporter inhibitory activity – towards development of a novel strategy for treatment of diabetes mellitus. Method Isolation of bioactive component was carried out using differential solvent extraction, HPTLC and HPLC, and identification was done by GC-MS. In-vitro studies on intestine, liver, kidney and in-vivo assessment by OGT… Show more

“…Also, it has powerful antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties (Elguindy et al, 2018). It was shown to reduce hyperglycemia by boosting the activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase in the tissues of the liver and kidney (Babukumar et al, 2017) or glucose transporter 2 in the diabetic rat (Kamble et al, 2020). It can also improve the metabolic disorder in rats caused by fructose overconsumption (Ibrahim et al, 2015).…”

“…Also, geraniol has repeatedly been shown to have an antihyperglycemic impact by altering major carbohydrate metabolism enzymes [ 23 ]. It was established that geraniol's antihyperglycemic activity against diabetes complications is mediated by decreasing gluconeogenic enzymes and glucose transporter-2 (GLUT2) [ 47 ].…”
