Inhibition of aluminum alloy corrosion in electrolytes by self‐assembled fluorophosphonic acid molecular layer

Abstract: This paper presents the use of self-assembled molecular (SAM) layers of fluorophosphonic acids developed on aluminum surface. The SAM monolayers were adsorbed from ethanol solution, characterized by surface morphology visualized by atomic force microscopy, by the wettability by contact angle measurements.

“…The SAM surface modification method is generally used to reduce, e.g., corrosion and to mitigate biodeposition, for producing organic thin films on electronic units, for functionalization of a nanostructure on bigger surfaces, etc. [ 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 ]. The SAM method was elaborated by different research groups in the middle of the 1980s [ 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 ].…”

“…Studies on a series of alkyl phosphonic acids (C: 8, 10, 18) and on perfluorodecyl phosphonic acid affirmed the observation of the other researchers [ 126 ]. It was interesting that the very effective fluorophosphonic acid inhibits both the general and the pitting corrosion on mild steel, but was less active on aluminum in inhibition of uniform corrosion as the electrochemical and atomic force microscopic corrosion tests proved [ 29 ].…”

“…Telegdi et al [59], explaining the widespread recognition of SAMs formed by perfluoroalkylphosphonic acids usually containing C 7 or C 8 , noted that such ultrathin coatings are better than similar APhs with hydrocarbon or silicone tails. With the example of APhC 8 F 10 , they showed the ability of APhF to prevent not only general but also local corrosion of an Al alloy in 0.1 M NaCl.…”

“…The aluminium matrix spontaneously forms a protective insulating ultra-thin oxide film with terminating surface hydroxyl groups under atmospheric conditions and near neutral pH-values [ 8 , 9 ]. Such hydroxylated aluminium oxide surfaces enable the stable binding of molecules with corrosion protecting and/or adhesion promoting properties such as organophosphonic acids [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ], fatty acids [ 15 , 16 , 17 ], and organosilanes [ 18 , 19 ]. Aryl diazonium salts have been also reported as precursors of thin organic films adsorbed on aluminium alloys, with potential applications for the corrosion protection of these materials [ 20 , 21 ].…”
